The Story of Britain: From the Romans to the present, by Roy Strong

07 September 2018

“A ‘V’ for victory arises from suburbanised Britain” in this 1945 Labour election poster, says Roy Strong’s The Story of Britain: From the Romans to the present, first published in 1998, when a single-volume narrative history of the country was a rarity. It has been extended now to include the Blairite “New Britain” and “Brexit and Beyond”. Britain is still in the phase of meritocracy, forged by the 1944 Education Act, he suggests, but “whether we are at its apogee or witnessing its decline it is too early to say” (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, £30 (£27); 978-1-4746-0705-6)
